CODE OF ETHICS

Gian Magana does not aim to please or be liked by everyone. His body of work is intended for global-level audiences, with a niche of target audiences who are: art enthusiasts, and photography book collectors. In an era where mass communication, graphic design, and the internet have reshaped interactions, people have become increasingly sensitive to certain stimuli. While he currently lives, resides, and documents in the cities throughout Puget Sound; his works will not target the local populations, clients, and small business.

Understanding non-verbal cues and reading the room is essential. While some photographers focus on portraits with high-performance cameras, others may employ the same equipment for different purposes. Recognizing these distinctions is critical to prevent misunderstandings or regrets.

Guidelines:

  • Gian Magana takes no responsibility for one's hurt or offended feelings. Nor shall he apologize for his shortcomings or mistakes for others. Reflexive apologies and certain polite language often create more awkwardness, and even well-intended ones can lead to ghosting, stonewalling, or retaliation.

  • While Gian frequents the marginalized and the city's homeless population, the artist is not obligated to perform charitable acts during his photography walks. However, he may engage in acts of charity outside his photographic practice.

  • Gian will only carry minimal cash while working to avoid influencing or altering the natural scene. Gian is also not to be allowed to accept large denominations of cash (e.g., $50 or $100 USD).

  • Gian rarely asks for permission before photographing people in public spaces, adhering to the candid nature of street photography.

  • While working, Gian moves between different city blocks, avoiding extended stays in one location to prevent unwanted attention or disruption.

  • First impressions should not determine final thoughts or verdicts about people or situations.

  • In communities where privacy concerns are prevalent, Gian may shorten his time spent seeking subjects due to people’s discomfort with cameras.

  • Gian’s work is not substitute for professional photography services. Nor is he a immediate replacement with a professional photographer in your local area. He remains steadfast in his creative direction. Those seeking portrait sessions or milestone photography should consider hiring a dedicated photographer in a town and city near you.

  • Gian does not establish client relationships while conducting street photography. However, he networks with creatives, enthusiasts, and peers during photowalks, breaks, and industry events such as keynote presentations and lectures.

  • Statements like “You are loved,” “Everything will be okay,” or “Time will pass” are unwelcome if used as generic reassurances.

  • Gian does not use deepfakes or AI-generated imagery, considering such practices exploitative. His post-processing is done in Adobe Lightroom, applying a monochrome (B&W) recipe to emulate Ilford Black and White film, without using artificial filters.

These principles guide Gian Magana’s approach to street photography, ensuring integrity, respect, and artistic authenticity in his work.
